Types of Area Rugs
Hooked Rugs
Each tuft of the yarn is looped on the face pf the rug and connected to the
next tuft of the same color. They offer a very rich variety of designs,
textures and colors.
Braided Rugs
These rugs are made by binding strands of braided yarns together. Generally
creating an oval or round rug. They are generally a reversible product.
Fabricated Rugs
This the process where broadloom carpet is taken and cut into pieces and
then re-fabricated with carved edging into a unique design, color and size.
A custom type method that is ideal for the consumer who has a design, color
and size needs that cannot be met by your standard rug.
Hand-Woven Pile Rugs
These rugs are truly made by hand weaving or hand knotting. They are made on
un-powered looms, generally by one or more people from families that have
been making rugs this way for generations. This type of hand-woven rugs or
hand-knotted rugs have pile. Where as the top ends of the yarn are sheared
to a uniform length, creating a soft and durable texture to walk on.
Hand-Woven Flat Woven Rugs
These types of rugs are also hand-woven on un-powered looms by the same type
of weavers, however these rugs have no pile and are almost always
reversible.
Fiber Content
Generally wool has a softer feel and takes color more subtly
and naturally than synthetic fibers. Without any external treatment it
resists soiling because of the natural oils it contains. It produces a long
lasting product.
Synthetic fibers have come a long way. Beautiful and durable rugs are now
often made of synthetic fibers. Polypropylene and nylon fibers take color in
a very beautiful and appropriate way. They are protected for stain
resistance with sophisticated treatments. They are frequently less expensive
that their wool counterparts. There are terrific rugs being offered at
extremely affordable prices.
